Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

About Us

Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are bishops, priests and deacons. These persons distribute Holy Communion by virtue of their ordination. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC), more commonly known as Communion Ministers, are lay faithful deputed by the Church to assist in distributing the Eucharist. They also bring the Holy Eucharist to the sick or homebound parishioners.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Assist in Distribution: EMHCs assist the priest in distributing the Holy Eucharist to the congregation during the Communion Rite to ensure the distribution is orderly and not unduly prolonged.
  • Acknowledge Sanctity: Use the permissible words, “The Body of Christ” and the “Blood of Christ”, without adding additional names or words.
  • Ensure Order: Monitor communicants to ensure the Sacred Host is consumed immediately and handle any dropped hosts with the utmost reverence.
  • Ministry to the Sick and Homebound: They carry the Eucharist to those unable to attend Mass due to illness, age, or infirmity, acting as a link between the parish community and the sick.

Tasks & Practices

  • Preparation: Arrive early (typically 15 mins) to prepare and pray before Mass.
  • Sanctuary Entry: Approach the altar only after the priest has received Communion.
  • Distribution:
    • Body of Christ: Hold up the host and say, “The Body of Christ”. Wait for the communicant’s “Amen” before placing it on the tongue or in the hand.
    • Blessings: If a person approaches with arms crossed, offer a simple prayer such as “Receive the Lord Jesus in your heart”.
  • Post-Communion: Return the ciboria to the altar or credence table before returning to the pew for the post-communion prayer.

    Our Mission

The Ministry of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC) exists to serve the Church by reverently assisting in the distribution of the Holy Eucharist and by extending Christ’s presence to those who are unable to attend Mass. Rooted in faith, humility, and service, this ministry supports the clergy in ensuring that the Eucharist is made accessible to the wider parish community, especially the sick, elderly, and homebound. Through their ministry, EMHCs witness to the Church’s call to communion, compassion, and care, carrying out their role with devotion, respect, and a deep awareness of the sacredness of the Eucharist.

"Until the Lord comes, therefore, every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are proclaiming his death."

    1 Corinthians 11:26
