Hippolyte Berthold was credited with building St. Anne’s Church in Punggol.
The intention behind this development was to serve the growing number of Catholics in the area, who were mainly engaged in farming and small-scale fishing. The building of St. Anne’s Church was completed in July 1963 and on 26 July — St. Anne’s Feast Day — the late Archbishop Michael Olcomendy blessed and declared the Church open for worship. Thereafter, the late Fr. John Yu served as the first parish priest until 1968 before he was posted back to the Malacca Johore Diocese.
When the 1970s rolled around, the entire area was cleared of farming and animal husbandry. The Church population then dwindled to around 300. In the words of the late Fr. Berthold, “we have more pigs than men”, and there were plans to close St. Anne’s Church down. Thankfully, the blueprints for Sengkang and Punggol new towns were released and our Church sat right in the centre.
St. Anne’s Church has withstood the test of time. In 1988, there was only one Sunset Mass on Saturdays and an 8 AM Mass on Sundays — the latter of which only commenced in 2004. This was largely due to the small population. Today, our Church boasts a population of around 7,000 and is one of the youngest, fastest growing parishes in the Archidocese.

However, the Church was in debt to the tune of around $8 million. Thanks to the dynamism and creativity of our priests, coupled with the wholesome and untiring support of our ministry members, parishioners and benefactors, we were able to embark on fund-raising events.
Praise to the Lord, St. Anne’s Church was debt-free in August 2005.
