In February 1961, a piece of land adjacent to the former Meng Tech School \u2014 now known at St. Joseph\u2019s Convent \u2014 was acquired, and the late Fr. Hippolyte Berthold was credited with building St. Anne\u2019s Church in Punggol.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The intention behind this development was to serve the growing number of Catholics in the area, who were mainly engaged in farming and small-scale fishing. The building of St. Anne\u2019s Church was completed in July 1963 and on 26 July \u2014 St. Anne\u2019s Feast Day \u2014 the late Archbishop Michael Olcomendy blessed and declared the Church open for worship. Thereafter, the late Fr. John Yu served as the first parish priest until 1968 before he was posted back to the Malacca Johore Diocese.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the 1970s rolled around, the entire area was cleared of farming and animal husbandry. The Church population then dwindled to around 300. In the words of the late Fr. Berthold, \u201cwe have more pigs than men\u201d, and there were plans to close St. Anne\u2019s Church down. Thankfully, the blueprints for Sengkang and Punggol new towns were released and our Church sat right in the centre.<\/span><\/p>\n

St. Anne\u2019s Church has withstood the test of time. In 1988, there was only one Sunset Mass on Saturdays and an 8 AM Mass on Sundays \u2014 the latter of which only commenced in 2004. This was largely due to the small population. Today, our Church boasts a population of around 7,000 and is one of the youngest, fastest growing parishes in the Archidocese.<\/span><\/p>\n

The current landmark of St. Anne\u2019s Church stemmed from the vision and foresight of Fr. John Lau who, in March 1993, started to prepare the parish for an influx of Catholic communities with the fast development of the Sengkang Estate and Punggol 21.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1997, a Church Building Committee was formed and we were blessed with the following developments:\u2013<\/span><\/p>\n

Renovation works on the Church was carried out at a cost of $1.2 million and completed in May 1999.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the dust had settled, we officially took over the new complex in February 2002. However, the Church was in debt to the tune of around $8 million. Thanks to the dynamism and creativity of our priests, coupled with the wholesome and untiring support of our ministry members, parishioners and benefactors, we were able to embark on fund-raising events.<\/span><\/p>\n

Praise to the Lord, St. Anne\u2019s Church was debt-free in August 2005.<\/span><\/p>\n
